Tips

  • Always try to have an actual sample of what you are trying to make in front of you. At the very least, have a high quality color photograph. This will really help with creating colors and textures.
  • Keep in mind that some items you may want to make will require that you dedicate dishware or serving pieces to them. Often the faux food cannot be removed once set. Make sure you are willing to part with dishware before you decide on a project. Do not use historic pieces, collection pieces, or family heirlooms.
  • If you are making period-specific faux food, make sure to do thorough research so you do not create foods that were not available and/or not accessible by the local population. Your local library is a good source for period newspaper and magazine articles. Also look for period books on entertaining and cooking. Contact the curator at Rancho Los Alamitos (RLA) if you would like to access period reference books in RLA's collection.
  • Be creative with your use of materials. With a little imagination, many items can become part of a faux food "recipe".
